Description
Getting ready
We are going to view Jo’s calf rearing facility and learn about the key criteria she focussed on when building a shed dedicated to calf rearing.
Running an efficient system
We will learn about Jo’s management system which is set up for maximum efficiency as she runs it solo. We will also hear about how she looks after calves successfully from day one to transitioning out of the shed, how she troubleshoots any issues, and how she manages her surplus calves.
Calf health – preventing and managing disease
Jo will outline what you can do to keep your calves in good health, how to monitor their health, first aid for your calves, and how to manage any disease issues. For example, what to do if you have an issue with scours, how to identify what your problem is, prevent it from spreading, and restoring your calves to full health.
Next steps – heading off to grazing
Your calves are looking great, how can you make sure they continue to thrive when grazing off? Aaron Leppard, New Zealand Grazing Company, and Jarrod Hawkins, heifer grower, will outline the practical tips and actions farmers should take to make sure the transition to grazing is seamless and you get the most out of off-farm grazing.
