We are going to look into the Hendriks’:
- Excellent reproductive results. How they are achieving a 1-3% empty rate and eight days between planned start of calving to their calving mid-point from a 9 week mating period.
- How they grow and utilise their homegrown feed. They harvest 17-19 t DM/ha and have a feed conversion efficiency of 14 kg DM/kg MS from pasture rotations which range from 28 – 170 days.
- Preparation for the future. How they are going to manage their nitrogen use and stocking rates to meet regulatory changes while still financially supporting three families.
- Strategies for tackling the challenges of farming on peat.
Lameness – stopping the hop
Lameness is a complex problem with many contributing factors. Neil Chesterton, veterinarian and lameness guru, will explain how to tackle lameness by identifying and managing the risks, which include infrastructure and stock management aspects. His lively presentation will look at the issue from multiple angles, and even if you have years of farming experience you will gain new ideas that are simple to action on your own farm.
