Field day, Spotlight on the System, Towai, Northland, 23rd September

SKU: N/A Categories: ,

Our hosts, Sandra and Les Wallace, own a 79 ha farm where their son, Brent, 50:50 sharemilks 170 cows. We will learn about their business, which supports two families, and includes three run-offs (where they finish beef, graze replacements, and grow crops and supplements), and a contracting sideline.

Somatic cell count – how low can you go?

The Wallace farm has consistently achieved great BMSCC results. Steve Cranefield, Agrihealth, will help us to delve into the secrets to achieving a low somatic cell count in your herd. Also, he will talk about how you can prevent and manage mastitis on your farm, how to get to the root of a mastitis problem, and the opportunity MaxT offers for making a positive difference.

Feeding your herd this spring/summer

Making the most of your pasture

Jen Corkran, Barenbrug, will share how you can get the best out of your pasture this spring and set it up so it persists over summer, by looking after new tillers, leaving the right residuals, and managing your surplus effectively. She will also cover the role summer crops can play.

Choosing the right supplements for your system

Ian Williams, Pioneer Brand Products, will talk about using supplements in your feed budget, when and how to feed them, and getting the best economic return from them. He will also outline the steps to making high quality pasture silage, and the best use of maize silage crops.
