Pasture renewal that works
Developing pastures that produce optimally and last the distance, especially in wet conditions, is a real challenge. Simon Moloney, agronomist, will talk about pasture renewal strategies for the West Coast, how to select varieties that will suit your system, establishment techniques, weed control, and grazing management. Simon has 35 years’ experience as an agronomist, including eleven years as Pāmu’s agronomist – designing and maintaining their farms’ forage systems nationwide.
Getting value out of your surplus calves
There is increasing pressure to shift away from the bobby calf model for dealing with surplus calves. Bob Thomson, AgFirst, will talk about the different options for generating a return from surplus calves, including how you can analyse them and select a policy that will fit your business. For example, can you rear and finish calves yourself? What impact will that have on your milk production revenue? Is it better to sell your surplus calves to a beef finisher? If it is, what will be required to successfully put this policy into action?
