Spotlight on the System – Manutahi, November 17th

SKU: N/A Categories: ,

We are visiting Donovan and Sophie Croot for this field day, where we are going to investigate: setting and achieving your breeding goals, creating your summer feed plan, and successfully managing your heifers.

Breeding to fit your goals

Donovan and Sophie Croot are focused on accelerating the genetic gain of their Holstein Friesian herd; using ET is one way of achieving this. Plus selling surplus heifers for a good price is an added income stream for their business. Jair Mandriaza, LIC Senior Reproduction Solutions Advisor, will talk about how to achieve your goals for your herd, by developing the right breeding plan, making the right culling decisions, and good reproductive management.

Feeding your herd this summer

Last year’s dry summer put pressure on our systems, this farm has installed an in-shed feeding system to cope. We are all looking at our feeding policies and the balancing act between home-grown and bought-in feed. Debbie McCallum, Dairy Trust Taranaki, will explore getting the best results from your pasture over summer, incorporating supplements in a cost effective way, and creating a feeding policy that adapts to varying conditions throughout the season.

Successful heifer management

Dallas Nelley, Taranaki Veterinary Centre, will talk about how to produce a high quality heifer that will come into your herd at her best and ready for the long haul. What are the key targets and how can you meet them? And how do you decide whether to graze them off or keep them at home? If you graze them off how do you manage them when they get home so they go on to produce well and get in calf again?
