SKU: N/A Categories: ,

Frankie Stevens, our host, is contract milking on Stu Roberts’ farm. They will outline how they have set up a solid contract milking arrangement that works for them, particularly since they have made a conscious decision to decrease intensity. We will also hear about breeding policies to reduce bobby numbers and maximise returns, and planning and implementing riparian planting.

Description

Making the most from less

Frankie and Stu are focussed on remaining profitable while minimising nitrogen use and milking OAD. Dave Clark (former DairyNZ scientist) will look at the opportunities and challenges of de-intensifying, mainly by reducing your feed inputs and/or stocking rate, and the outcomes of doing it.

No bull

Jair Mandriaza, LIC, will go through the various strategies you can use to maximise your breeding policy’s benefits, and reduce bobby numbers e.g. all AI, sexed semen, specialist beef breeds (like Wagyu). What are the pros and cons, how can you determine which options are the best fit for your farm system? Owl Farm has been trialling a variety of these strategies, Tom Buckley, farm manager, will share their experiences and the data they have collected.

Planting it up

Jackson Efford, BOPRC, will talk about what you need to consider when planning riparian planting on your farm, actioning your plan, and how to make sure you get the best results. What are the potential pitfalls and how can you avoid them? What options work best? What funding is available to support you?
